A leadership team on which I serve was assigned an article on strategic thinking. Within the article, it was claimed that "organizations must have resources from which to operate, and these resources must be valuable, rare, inimitable, sustainable and appropriable." Working in the volunteer, non-profit sector, I have no trouble identifying valuable, sustainable and appropriable resources, but I really struggle to articulate what is rare and/or inimitable about our organization in comparison with so many others. And that question is one of the best presents I have ever received!
