It occurred to me a few years ago that television and movies have switched places. It used to be that advertisers loved TV because they were dealing with a more-or-less captive audience. Sure, you could change channels or turn the TV off altogether, but if you wanted to watch a show, you'd have to sit through ads to see it. When I go to buy oranges at the grocery store, I normally check the price and weigh my selection to know roughly how much they're going to cost me.
