Profile Information

At work, do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?
Yes!
Profession
Writer and Editor
Best part of your job:
Being able to play to my strengths - specifically, writing documents that explain things logically and clearly, and figuring out the most efficient ways to have software help me do that. Also, the people I work with are really cool and I'm not just saying that because they can read this.
Your 2nd choice of profession (and why):
Professor of literature - so I could get paid to read and write about the classics all day.
Your favorite book/movie/time waster:
Movie: "It's a Wonderful Life"
Book: "The Brothers Karamazov"
Time waster: these never last long. Wii tennis? Portal? TV? Probably TV.
You would love to meet:
I really don't do celebrity encounters. No idea what to say.

Got a view thread option now, which makes conversations way easier to happen. That's a nice touch.

I was being literal and cheeky and weird at the same time. Some dumb old senator once described the internet as "a series of tubes." It was hilarious at the time.

The Hot Button - Unhealthy Health Care

Health care is an ongoing concern not just in the United States, but in countries around the world. Everywhere, it seems, there is a tension between improved treatments and medicines, rising costs and aging populations that require more and more of the very expensive health care that human ingenuity keeps improving. …

The Hot Button - Quit Joking Around and Get to Work (You'll Live Longer)

For a guy who claims to be skeptical of studies, I sure read about a lot of them. This one caught my eye though because it's an indirect endorsement of the concept of strengths.

Researchers at UC Riverside turned up some surprising findings in a…

The Hot Button - Movies are the New Television (and Vice Versa)

It occurred to me a few years ago that television and movies have switched places. It used to be that advertisers loved TV because they were dealing with a more-or-less captive audience. Sure, you could change channels or turn the TV off altogether, but if you wanted to watch a show, you'd have to sit through ads to see it. Now, many of us (most of us) don't even watch TV as it airs live, but either use TiVo (my personal favorite) or another…

The Hot Button - A Simple Question

When I go to buy oranges at the grocery store, I normally check the price and weigh my selection to know roughly how much they're going to cost me. When I take my car in to the mechanic's shop, he gives me an estimate (okay, sometimes it's a cruel joke, but still) of how much it's going to cost to repair whatever my issue is. Before I click "Place order" on Amazon.com or a hundred other e-tailers, they've told me exactly how much the item, the shipping and the tax will…
